To assist our legal team, we are looking for two Legal Externs to help with a wide range of legal research, transactional, intellectual property and regulatory matters. Our legal department takes an active role in guiding the direction and structure of our strategic planning, commercial arrangements and government outreach. Accordingly, we are looking for two highly motivated self-starters with good business judgment who enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced and collaborative environment. In this challenging position, you will report to a designated supervising attorney and work closely with our legal team. Simply put, we are seeking motivated attorneys-in-training to help a rapidly growing company execute its business plan.
This position will be based in our Irvine, CA headquarters. While start and end dates are flexible, our shortest externship term is eight weeks, and we require externs to work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week. The position is unpaid. You must receive school credit for the externship, which must be approved by your law school’s externship director.
The impact you’ll make:
Review domestic and international regulatory and legal developments which impact our company or our customers
Assist with collecting and systematizing large amounts of regulatory and industry information
Conduct research and draft memoranda to assist attorneys in various legal matters
Draft, edit and review various commercial contracts
Assist with corporate structuring and governance matters
Assist with intellectual property matters (including IP protection matters)
What you’ve accomplished:
In the process of completing 2L or 3L year of an ABA-accredited law school with phenomenal academic standing
Can effectively prioritize and manage multiple matters
Thorough knowledge of how to conduct legal research and writing
Thorough knowledge of how to use Lexis, Westlaw and other legal resources
Ability to work independently on assignments and projects with little direction from attorneys
Interest in regulatory structures and knowledge of the legislative process
Interest in intellectual property, including trademark and copyright, and technology agreements
Passion for startups and technology
Thorough knowledge of how to use the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and Google Docs
Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with members of both the legal and operations teams
Law school transcript
3-5 page writing sample demonstrating your legal research and writing skills (please provide an explanation of who, if anyone, has helped revise the sample since its first draft)
